Literacy group celebrates 20th anniversary

Bi-State Literacy Council will celebrate the group’s 20th anniversary at an annual awards and scholarship event at 9 a.m. today at i wireless Center, 1201 River Drive, Moline.

Si Roberts, a former Adult Basic Education director, will speak. Tickets are $10 for members, $12 for nonmembers. E-mail judyh@palsnet. info, call (309) 799-3155, ext. 3150 or fax (309) 799-7916.

The literacy council also has awarded $3,200 to 16 area programs that promote literacy skills and practice.

Receiving $200 grants are Kids First Academy, Camanche; Stay and Play Child Care and Children’s Discovery Center, Clinton; St. Joseph Catholic School, DeWitt; Kewanee Even Start, Kewanee; Tree of Knowledge Program, Muscatine; Garfield Elementary, Jane Addams School and Morning Coffee Club, Moline; Hosts Program and Project Literacy, Rock Island; Wood Intermediate School, Play & Read Kids Summer and STAARS Mentoring Program, Davenport; Heritage Christian School Library, Eldridge; and Bettendorf Public Library.
