Muscatine’s Jake Wagg, a second-team player on the Quad-City Times’ All-Metro boys basketball team, will continue his career at St. Ambrose University.

“We feel that Jake has an outstanding 3-point shooting ability, as exemplified by his numbers at Muscatine,” Bees coach Ray Shovlain said in a news release. “As a team MVP and leader for the past two years, we feel very comfortable that Jake will be able to assume that role for us here.”

Wagg, a 6-foot guard, averaged 16 points a game as a senior and led the Mississippi Athletic Conference with 45 3-pointers. He finished his career with 905 points.

He is one of many area student athletes who recently have made college selections.

Troy Rorer and Peter Wessels, a pair of starters on Bettendorf’s conference runner-up basketball team, will follow in their brothers’ footsteps and enroll this fall at Augustana.

Rorer, a member of the Quad-City Times’ All-Metro second team, is a 6-foot-2 guard who averaged 9.7 points and 4.5 rebounds a game for the Bulldogs (19-4), whose only losses were to Iowa Class 4A state champion Iowa City High and three times to state runner-up Davenport Central. He was a first-team all-conference pick. Rorer’s brother Oliver played for the Vikings.

Wessels, also a 6-2 guard, led the Bulldogs in scoring at 10.3 points a game and was a second-team all-conference performer. He will join brother Brett on next year’s squad. Another brother, Drew, also played for the Vikings.

The pair from Bettendorf join two Chicago area players in committing to play at Augustana. The others are 6-2 point guard Brian DeSimone of Buffalo Grove, a four-year varsity letterwinner who averaged 16 points a game last year, and 6-4 forward Josh Evans of Skokie Niles North.

Among the others:

Baseball

Dustin Jones, a senior pitcher at Morrison, has signed to play at Muscatine Community College. He is 5-1 this season for the Mustangs, who lead the Three Rivers Conference. He was a first-team all-conference player last year.

Basketball

Gabbie Binion of Davenport Assumption has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Southeastern Community College in Keokuk. A 5-foot-7 guard, she was a second-team all-state guard for Assumption’s unbeaten state championship team and averaged 3.9 points and 7.7 rebounds a game.

Kelsey Jipp, a two-time second-team all-Mississippi Athletic Conference player at Pleasant Valley, will play basketball at Coe College in Cedar Rapids next season. She also was an all-tournament player on the Spartans’ state runner-up softball team last summer.

Emily McLain of Prophetstown will continue her basketball career at Kishwaukee College in Malta, Ill. McLain was a Times’ first-team All-Western Illinois player who finished her career as Prophetstown’s all-time leader in scoring (1,876 points) and assists (527) and second all-time with 774 rebounds. Kishwaukee, a member of the Arrowhead Conference, finished 14-16 last season.

Mykleby was undefeated during her career in dual meets as a swimmer and placed sixth at state in the 200-yard individual medley last fall and third in a pair of relays.

Keri Sorensen, a multisport standout at Pleasant Valley, will continue her softball career at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. She has played varsity softball for four years and earned second-team all-state honors as an infielder last year, when she batted .368.
