Area apprentices will show their carpentry and floor-covering skills

May 17 at the annual Union Carpenters Apprentice Contest.

The event, which is open to the public, will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Carpenter Training Center of the Quad-Cities, 479 27th St., East Moline.

Twenty apprentice carpenters and three apprentice floor coverers will be challenged to complete projects within an eight-hour time limit. The event marks the culminating activity of four years of apprentice training.

The contest is sponsored by the Joint Apprentice Training Committee, which provides training for new apprentices and continuing education for journeymen. The committee represents three area unions, Local 4, Davenport; Local 166, Milan, Ill.; and Local 678, Dubuque, Iowa.
