DeWITT, Iowa — Construction will begin this summer on a $2 million downtown street project approved Monday night by the DeWitt City Council.

The project will include street reconstruction, sewer work and streetscape amenities such as lighting and colored, stamped concrete on 7th, 8th and 9th streets between 5th and 7th avenues.

Not included in the cost is about $50,000 in sanitary sewer work that also will be done.

City Administrator Steve Lindner said part of the project will be funded by a $1.44 million federal earmark that covers only some parts of the project. Lindner estimated that about 75 percent of the project would be eligible for the federal funds.

Lindner said the bid accepted by the council was about $400,000 more than the estimate because of increasing costs for fuel and piping. The council had considered waiting to bid the project again in the fall but decided to proceed.

“I think it’s only going to get more expensive if we wait,” council member Steve Hasenmiller said.

Construction is to begin no later than June 23 and could be completed by early fall, Lindner said.
