PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Time magazine has named Peoria native Nancy Brinker one of its “100 Most Influential People” for 2008.

The 61-year-old Brinker is honored for her work fighting breast cancer in the magazine’s May 12th edition.

She started the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation more than two decades ago in Dallas. Her response to her sister’s death from breast cancer has raised nearly $1 billion for breast cancer research.

Her son Eric Brinker lives in Peoria and is president of the city’s Metro Centre shopping area.

He says he’s excited by the honor.
