SPRINGFIELD — As U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood prepares to step down after his seventh term representing Illinois’ 18th Congressional District, he has announced his intent to run for a top spot in the state GOP.
The Republican from Peoria said he will seek to continue his political career as a national committeeman for Illinois, representing the state party at the Republican National Convention.
“It’s an opportunity for me to stay involved in politics,” LaHood said. “It’s a way to continue my Republican Party activities in Illinois.”
LaHood seeks to replace current national committeeman Bob Kjellander, who has announced he will step down from the position at the end of his current term.
“[Kjellander] made it clear to me that he was not going to seek the position again,” LaHood said.
Recent testimony in the corruption trial of Tony Rezko alleged that Rezko asked Kjellander to use his influence with former White House political strategist Karl Rove to oust U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald in order to stop his investigation of Rezko.
LaHood said he has communicated with members of the Republican state committee and Andy McKenna, the chairman of the Illinois Republican Party. LaHood said he has received favorable responses from them.
“I’m very pleased with the response I’ve been getting,” LaHood said.
Lance Trover, a spokesman for the Illinois Republican Party, said that while McKenna does not endorse any candidate for the position, he praised LaHood as a valuable member of the party.
“[McKenna] believes Ray [LaHood] has been a tremendous leader both nationally and for the state of Illinois and will succeed in whatever he decides to do after Congress,” Trover said.
The Illinois Republican Party will elect the next national committeeman at the Illinois Republican Convention in June in Decatur.
