Wapsi likely to fall below flood stage next week

DeWITT, Iowa — The Wapsipinicon River is expected to remain steady about 2.5 feet above flood stage in Scott and Clinton counties until early Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
The river level south of DeWitt is expected to drop below its flood stage of 11 feet late Tuesday for the first time in more than a month.
That’s good news for Gerald Flint, owner of the Wapsi Oaks Country Club near Calamus, where flooding shut down the golf course all week.
Flint said as long as the course doesn’t see any more rain, golfers could play holes 3-9 early next week and the entire course could be open by next weekend.
“It will recede really fast as long as it doesn’t rain on us,” he said.
Earlier in the week, about half of the first hole and all of the second were under water, Flint said.
“I’ve seen it just a little bit worse than this, but this is the second-worst,” Flint said.
Clinton County Emergency Management Coordinator Chance Kness said Friday the Wapsipinicon appears to have leveled off. He said he has not received any requests for assistance from people who live near the banks of the Wapsi because most of the residents there are used to coping with flooding.
No one on the Scott County side of the river has made a formal request for flood assistance, either, according to the Scott County Health Department.
