CLINTON, Iowa — After her brother, Madyx, was born prematurely in 2004, 3-year-old Corynn Hugunin visited him in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit every day for
six weeks.
During that time, she learned one inescapable fact — there’s not much for big sisters to do in the NICU.
“I was bored and scared,” said Corynn, now 6.
About a year ago, she mentioned those feelings to her mother, Jennifer.
“We got to talking about it, and I never even thought about it,” Jennifer Hugunin said. “I was so focused on my son.”
Corynn said she thought if the NICU had some books and toys for children to play with, they wouldn’t be as bored or scared when visiting their younger brothers and sisters, so she decided to start a collection for the NICU at Genesis Medical Center’s East Rusholme Street campus in Davenport.
On Sunday, a toy and book drive will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the RollerDen 2000 on U.S. 67 in Camanche. Admission is free for children who bring a toy in its original
packaging or a book. The event also will feature the Big Mouth Mickies roller derby team and the Miss Clinton County title holders.
Genesis spokesman Craig Cooper said the hospital is grateful for the help.
‘The toys and games will be great,” Cooper said. “It will be a welcome addition.”
