SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Rod Blagojevich wants to move nearly 150 Department of Transportation jobs from Springfield to southern Illinois.

The administration cited cost concerns, saying the move could save millions of dollars because the Springfield lease is expensive. But the announcement Friday came with no warning to the Springfield traffic safety employees whose jobs would be moved, sparking outrage among officials in the area.

“This guy’s destroying the state, community and families,” state Sen. Larry Bomke, R-Springfield, said of Blagojevich. “Enough is enough.”

In a news release, IDOT director Milton Sees cited unemployment in southern Illinois as a reason for the move.

“Governor Blagojevich is committed to growing the economy of southern Illinois,” Sees said in a statement. “This move will bring new families and jobs to an area that needs them the most.”

IDOT spokesman Brian Williamsen said an exact location hadn’t yet been picked for a new office and that a move won’t be immediate. Employees working there now would be offered the opportunity to relocate, he said.

Williamsen said the decision wasn’t politically motivated.

    “Oh, no,” he said.
