You know, after hearing stories about the 9-year-old kids wanting to stab someone and other crimes of the like, it makes me wonder, why do we live in a society where we pay more attention and give more notoriety to the people who commit crimes?
Look at the news or read the paper. It’s all about book deals or movies of the week or whatever publicity these people get. Where are the book deals or the publicity for the victims of the crime? Why don’t we see lengthy pieces about them instead of the perpetrator? Why do we give the perpetrators so much press they don’t deserve?
There was a TV show on recently, I forget which one, and there was a character on it who committed a crime under the premise that once people found out it was him who did it, he would live on in history. However, once the prosecutor told him that there was no way that people would even know it was him and he would get no publicity, his face went from happy to “I’m going to jail and not getting my time in the spotlight for it.”
Just shows, there is no perceived punishment for anything. Maybe if we spent more time punishing the perpetrator and not glamorizing them, like in the musical “Chicago,” then maybe criminals would be held more accountable for their actions, not given a book deal or any other type of fame for it.
