CAMANCHE, Iowa — Flooding along the Wapsipinicon and Mississippi Rivers has closed county parks and roads in Clinton County.

Water is over the road on 280th Street, 102nd Avenue, 112th Avenue, 145th Avenue and 125th Avenue in the Big Rock area south of Wheatland, and on 150th Avenue between 200th Street and 160th Avenue east of Toronto, Assistant Clinton County Engineer Angie Kersten said.

She said county workers are building a gravel berm along E63 north of Toronto to keep floodwaters from going up over the paved road.

Water also is over the road at the intersection of old U.S. 30 and 154th Avenue east of Wheatland and on 180th Street, 112th Avenue and 120th Avenue near Toronto, Kersten said.

Fueled by heavy rains last week to the northwest, the Wapsipinicon is forecast to crest Friday at 13.3 feet, more than 2 feet above its 11-foot flood stage. The river measured 12.74 feet Monday.

Mississippi River water also closed 9th Street in Camanche and has surrounded homes in the Swan’s Slough area, where most homes are built on pillars in case of a flood.

Camanche City Administrator Tom Roth said while city officials are keeping a close eye on the river, they do not anticipate any major flooding in the town.

“It doesn’t look like it’s going to reach the level where it’s going to cause us a good deal of problems, but it’s close.” Roth said. “It’s real close.”

Clinton County Conservation was forced to cancel today’s maiden voyage of its new eco-cruise boat and all other eco-cruises for the week, and has closed Rock Creek Park in Folletts, Walnut Grove Park in Toronto and Sherman Park near Calamus.

The Mississippi at Camanche was at 20.04 feet Monday, with a crest forecast at 20.3 feet today. Flood stage is 17 feet at Camanche.

In Illinois, some homes along the bank Mississippi River north of Albany have been affected by high water, but the water is not expected to go over Illinois 84, said Jim Wetzell, the county’s emergency Services and Disaster Agency coordinator.
