U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, has joined the majority of his colleagues and formed a Leadership PAC.

The political action committee is aimed at electing like-minded candidates, a spokesman, Jeff Giertz, said Monday.

Braley, a freshman lawmaker, is calling the new fundraising vehicle the Bringing Leadership Back PAC. The name’s initials match his own. Braley’s middle name is Lowell.

A survey released last week by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, D.C., said at least 232 House members have acknowledged forming Leadership PACs, which are so-named because they had been used primarily by party leaders.

Rep. Phil Hare, D-Ill., has already formed a Leadership PAC.

He did so last month, calling it People Helping Illinois Lead, or PHIL PAC.

Giertz wouldn’t say how much money Braley’s PAC intended to raise. But Braley has shown himself to be an able fundraiser, particularly with labor unions and lawyers. Giertz said the PAC’s donor base would likely be similar to his own campaign committee.

Braley is co-chairman of the House Democrats’ Red to Blue effort, which seeks to elect Democrats to Republican-held seats.

He also is seeking a spot on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Braley filed papers with the Federal Election Commission to form the PAC on April 8. Its treasurer is Rob Tully, former chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party and a longtime activist from Des Moines.
