Something is definitely going on in Des Moines regarding our esteemed legislators. My point here is not to open a smoking or gambling debate, but to merely point out that when given a choice, the House, Senate and governor will side with the casino industry over the local small business owner.
Strike one for the small business owner. Two years ago they banned lottery machines because the casinos did not like the fact they looked and played like slot machines.
Strike two for the small business owner. Tuesday the “Clean Air” act was signed into law. Smoking is banned everywhere except on the gaming floors of a casino. One has to wonder what our legislators have in mind next.
It will be interesting to see the next round of campaign financial reports to learn just how much the casino industry spent or donated to inform our legislators as to why they should be exempted from the new law and small businesses should not.
