The recent letter to the editor titled “Make prosperity, not growth, a goal” (April 9) caught our attention. With due respect to the author, growth is the path to our shared goal of prosperity for Quad-City residents and businesses. The Quad-Cities region is not experiencing significant population growth. We are dealing with the challenges associated with not growing; fewer customers, fewer employees, less vitality.
Yes, more people will benefit businesses by supplying more customers and employees, as the writer suggests. Great—-healthier businesses are the key to prosperity. They are also the answer to growing the tax base and reducing each individual taxpayer’s share of the bill for the cost of our streets, schools, libraries, parks, police and other services.
DavenportOne is committed to helping business grow and prosper. As a business organization, we work with our partners — public and private — to identify and enact extraordinary strategies that will attract more families, more jobs and more investment. We’ve heard some pretty great ideas: a passenger rail connection between Chicago, the Quad-Cities and hopefully, Iowa City and Des Moines; opportunities to expand activity related to the Rock Island Arsenal federal campus, perhaps Davenport Promise; certainly, RiverVision.
Building a stronger community is not only better for business, it’s better for everyone. Growth is good.
