An autopsy confirmed Monday that Katherine D. Pedigo, 25, died from a stab wound to the neck, but police still weren’t releasing many details about the investigation.
Pedigo lived in an apartment at 320 16th Ave., Moline, in a home with three other rental units. Her body was found in a first-floor apartment shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday after a neighbor called authorities about a fire.
Two small fires had been set in the basement and were quickly extinguished, police said. They caused a small amount of damage.
Pedigo was a 2001 graduate of Rock Island High School and had lived with her mother in Rock Island as recently as last year, court records indicate.
A woman who answered the door at Katherine Pedigo’s mother’s house declined comment Monday afternoon. Pedigo’s father also declined comment.
Pedigo was hired at Kraft’s Oscar Mayer plant, Davenport, in January and worked a shift there that included weekends, Kraft Foods spokeswoman Cathy Pernu said. She wasn’t sure whether Pedigo worked this weekend.
“Our plant managers just learned about (the homicide) this afternoon,” Pernu said Monday. “Of course, everyone is shocked and saddened by news of this brutal crime.”
Rock Island County Chief Deputy Coroner Brian Gustafson said an autopsy Monday morning in Rockford confirmed Pedigo died from a stab wound to the neck. He would not say whether she was stabbed multiple times or what angle she was stabbed from because of the ongoing investigation.
Gustafson said there was no evidence of gunshot wounds. One neighbor reported hearing five gunshots Sunday morning.
The police investigation was ongoing Monday, but no additional information was released.
