The executive board of the Rock Island County NAACP requested a “citizen observer” – a person specifically from the East Moline neighborhood where a gun battle resulted in the death of a robbery suspect and injury to a police officer – be appointed to the task force investigating the incident.
The organization also called Saturday for continued calm “during this trying time,” asked officials to provide regular updates about the shooting, with “special consideration given to the residents of East Moline’s Watertown neighborhood.”
“The NAACP of Rock Island County will work in whatever capacity to assure a just outcome and to help the community heal,” president Lauren Loftin said, reading from a statement.
Kelton Trice, 21, was running away from officers Wednesday when he was confronted by Sgt. Tom Peterson and the two exchanged gunfire, a task force investigating the incident reported Friday.
Trice died after being shot four times in the chest outside the home where he and his grandmother lived at 1005 17th St. Autopsy results showed all four shots hit the left lateral side of his chest.
Peterson, who was shot twice, had gone to the scene to assist others in arresting Trice on a warrant for an armed robbery at a neighborhood store. Peterson’s bulletproof vest prevented the bullets from entering the officer’s body but still caused injuries that put him in the hospital overnight, officials said.
Trice was charged in Rock Island County Circuit Court on Wednesday afternoon in connection with a robbery April 9 at Gas N Dash Mart, 809 19th St., East Moline.
Devon Dixon, 20, is also charged in that robbery and several others. He was involved in an incident Tuesday in which he allegedly shot at a Moline police detective and struck the rear window of the officer’s car.
The NAACP also:
n extended its sympathy to Trice’s family and friends
n wished Peterson a speedy recovery.
n thanked residents for continued calm, and asked they be treated with respect and consideration.
n asked media to cover the tragedy responsibly, “in the best interest of the community.”
n promised to monitor developments in the investigation and to take appropriate action after the investigation is through.
