Encroaching Mississippi River floodwaters seeped over Davenport streets Friday as the spring 2008 flood officially arrived.
The river was right at the 15-foot flood stage Friday in the Quad-Cities, according to the National Weather Service office in the Quad-Cities, and is expected to crest at 16.3 feet Thursday.
“It looks like a pretty steady rise over the next two days, then a slower rise to the crest,” meteorologist David Sheets said.
Local rainstorms have not contributed significantly to the flooding, he added.
“Most of this is snowmelt and rain from up north,” he said.
Davenport officials said people using the riverfront should expect minor inconveniences.
Credit Island Park will close when the river reaches 15.8 feet and South Concord will remain closed, according to the city’s Public Works Department.
Sometime over weekend, Beiderbecke Drive along the riverfront will close in stages from Main to Marquette streets.
Also affected will be:
n Gaines Street south of the railroad tracks to Beiderbecke Drive.
n Perry Street between River Drive and Beiderbecke.
n The outside lanes of River Drive under the Crescent Railroad Bridge.
n Myrtle Street between 2nd Street and River Drive.
Traffic closures are put into place when needed, so be alert when driving in these areas for the next week. Detailed information on the traffic closures and the city’s flood plan can be found on the city’s Web site, cityofdavenportiowa.com.
The Public Works Department also put crews on 12-hour shifts to monitor the riverfront and pumping stations.
Downriver, the Mississippi also is above flood stage at the measuring stations at Muscatine, Iowa, and New Boston and Keithsburg in Illinois. The Wapsipinicon, Rock, Cedar and Iowa rivers also continue to flow at flood levels into the Mississippi, contributing to rising levels south of the Quad-Cities.
