A student making threatening comments in the cafeteria at Scott Community College this morning prompted officials to lockdown the college campus and call police, said Thomas Coley, president of the school.

Coley said the male student was just “having a bad day” when he made the comments. He declined to elaborate further on what was said.

“We thought it was serious enough to contact the police,” Coley said.

As a precaution, the school went on lockdown shortly after 10 a.m. for about 30 minutes. Officers from the Scott County Sheriff’s Department and Bettendorf Police Department were also called out to the Belmont campus and escorted the student off the grounds, Coley said.

The student will not face charges, and the college is further investigating the incident.

“We will assist him and make sure he has help with whatever issues he may have,” Coley said.
