The Steamwheelers accidentally Hayden Fry’ed themselves.
You remember the pink walls the wily former Iowa Hawkeyes football coach presented visiting teams at Kinnick Stadium?
Because a locker room they used to share with the Mallards is theirs to share with visiting hockey teams, the Steamwheelers thought they would paint the locker room Steamwheelers red.
Problem was, what they thought was red in a year-old, foreign-made jersey actually wasn’t.
“I got a frantic call from Kevin Snodgrass at the i wireless Center,” general manager Shawn Brown said. “He said ‘Shawn, you’d better get over here. Your locker room is pink.’ ”
In reality, it was fuchsia, Brown said, and when contrasted against the old jersey in bright light, the walls actually matched.
Coach Troy Biladeau was none too keen on giving his pre-game pep talks in a fuchsia-colored room, so the Wheelers paid for yet another paint job Thursday — this time fire-engine red.
Meanwhile, maybe coach Fry was onto something. Hockey visitors were 0-2 while dressing in a sea of fuchsia.
“Maybe we should have done it earlier,’’ Brown said of the Steamwheelers’ assist to a Flames team that has struggled at home.
Ready to raise Havoc
The Steamwheelers are among three af2 teams to reach a marketing agreement with the energy drink “Havoc.’’
The product will be sold by Quad-Cities retailers in a can with the Steamwheelers colors and logo.
The drink is available at the Steamwheelers’ downtown Moline offices by the case.
Ready to face Forbes
Kris Peters teamed up with Davenport native Matt Forbes in a basketball league last fall in the Quad-Cities.
Tonight they are on opposite sides again.
The Q-C receiver and veteran Louisville safety will clash over the middle in Freedom Hall, but Peters, a normally talkative sort, said he will keep the trash-yakking to a minimum against Forbes.
There’s too much respect between the top-level receiver and all-time af2 interceptions leader.
“I respect anyone who plays the game at a high level,” Peters said.
Forbes, who was an all-af2 defensive back for two straight Q-C seasons, is in his second-year in Louisville after playing a season for former Q-C coach Rich Ingold in Pennsylvania.
