MCCAUSLAND, Iowa — The good news just keeps on coming for the McCausland post office.

U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, announced Tuesday that U.S. Postal Service officials have rescinded canceling the lease for the temporary post office as work continues on a permanent facility. The reprieve comes less than two weeks before McCausland residents were to go to rural route service April 26.

Lloyd Claussen, a city council member who has led the fund-raising efforts for the new post office, was pleased to hear the news. He still wants the post office ready to go by the July 31 deadline postal officials gave the city earlier this year.

“We have everyone lined up to do the work,” he said. “Everything is falling into place, we just have to keep plugging away.”

McCausland will be presented Saturday with a check for $30,000 from the American Postal Workers Union that will cover the balance that still needs to be raised for the materials and labor to bring the building on Salina Street to postal service standards. The presentation will be made at a taco dinner fundraiser for the post office.

Harkin’s office faxed a letter to the postal service Monday regarding McCausland’s plight. The letter raised concerns about the sudden decision to close the post office and the added cost residents and businesses face by purchasing mailboxes and changing their addresses with utilities and on business

documents.

The senator’s greatest concern was that no assurances had been given despite the city’s efforts to raise money to pay for a new post office building. Harkin was pleased to announce the good news for McCausland.

“Small-town post offices, like McCausland’s, serve as important symbols of community pride and identification,” Harkin stated in a release. “The residents of McCausland have been working tirelessly for over three years to keep this civic landmark and I’m glad to see that the USPS is willing to work with them to keep a post office in their

community.”
