UPDATED: The Government Bridge was shut down late Tuesday afternoon as authorities investigate a barge hitting a bulkhead next to the lock. As of 5:40 p.m., the bridge had opened again for traffic.

The barge has been moved upstream and secured, and crews are on the bridge examining the structure. The barge’s outer hull was ruptured, but an inner hull remained intact, said Mark Frese, Davenport fire chief. The barge was empty, but customarily carries anhydrous ammonia.
