CAMBRIDGE, Ill. (AP) — Henry County authorities say a rural Erie man has pleaded guilty to setting fire to his estranged wife’s home, stabbing a man and then trying to kill himself and his son.
Henry County State’s Attorney Terry Patton says 52-year-old Kevin Shelledy had been scheduled for trial next week, but he pleaded guilty Friday to aggravated arson and two counts of attempted murder. The charges are Class X felonies under Illinois law, and each carries a prison sentence of six to 30 years.
Police say Shelledy set fire to his former wife’s home in 2006, knowing she was present. He also reportedly stabbed Rudy Tupis, who lived in a nearby apartment.
When officers arrived at Shelledy’s home, they say they found him and his toddler son in a running car, with a tube running from the exhaust pipe to the passenger compartment.
The child was not seriously injured.
