A man accused of leading police on a high-speed chase through Davenport in November was found innocent Tuesday.
Samuel Rush, 26, was charged with eluding, driving while barred, leaving the scene of an injury accident and possession of a controlled substance.
Defense attorney James Clements told the jury it was “speculation” about who was the driver of the vehicle.
The jury agreed.
According to police:
An off-duty officer, Jacob Pries, spotted the vehicle near Locust and Division streets on Nov. 29. He called the station and followed the Crown Victoria until marked squads could get into position to make a traffic stop.
The driver of the Crown Victoria began driving erratically when the squads appeared on the scene, police said. A traffic stop was attempted near Locust and Marquette streets, but the driver of the vehicle refused to stop and fled from officers.
The Crown Victoria went south on Marquette Street and intentionally crashed into a squad car at 9th and Marquette streets. The officer in the squad car was slightly injured, but the squad car suffered considerable damage.
The Crown Victoria then went eastbound on River Drive to Mound Street, where the driver lost control of the car, officials said.
The car spun and slid onto the grass on the south side of the roadway, struck three trees, sheering off one of them, and came to a stop. The front end of the Crown Victoria was crushed and smoking, and a “For Sale” sign remained hanging from the back of the car.
The three occupants fled on foot, but were captured a short distance away. Simmeon Hall, 25, of Rock Island pleaded guilty to interference with official acts and was fined $100. Giorgio Williams, 20, of Rock Island also pleaded guilty to interference with official acts. He was
fined $250.
