QUAD-CITY TIMES

The slogan is simple — and spot-on: “We are what we eat.” But the fascinating thing about going to fridgewatcher.com is that you get to see what people are stocking in their fridges before they eat it.

Sounds silly, doesn’t it? Looking at pictures of what is inside a person’s refrigerator. Really? That’s a Web site? It sure is. And you know what? It’s sort of entertaining in a voyeuristic sort of way.

At Fridgewatcher, you see the insides of refrigerators from around the world. It is part-nosy neighbor and part-educational. Who knew there were so many ways to organize produce, beer and lunch meat?

Many contributors to the site show you the outside of the fridge, too. We imagine this is to give you the complete experience. It adds another layer of intrigue as you see photos, homework and coupons.

The site has a country-by-country directory on the right side, making navigation simple. Some 39 countries are represented. The site has had nearly 500,000 visitors thus far. The site’s handlers say, “Every fridge tells a story. What’s yours?”

You can even fill out a survey about how you use your refrigerator and list which brands you prefer to put on the shelves.

Visitors can comment on what they see or just make snarky comments under their breath such as: “Wow, who’s the alcoholic in that apartment?” or “Has this person ever heard of vegetables?”

It’s fun. Trust us.
