An East Moline man sat in custody Saturday night after he attempted to flee with money he stole from an area convenience store, was chased down by a witness and detained until police arrived.
Fredrick C. Carter, 34, paroled from the Illinois Department of Corrections earlier this year, entered a Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, 1827 18th Ave., East Moline at 7:50 p.m. Saturday pretending to buy something. East Moline Sgt. Luke Blaser said that when an employee opened the cash register, Carter jumped across the counter, stole $80 and ran off.
At least one witness passing by pursued Carter for about a block, pounced on him and detained him until police arrived. No one was injured.
“We appreciate the help,” Blaser said. But chasing after a robber is not something police would advise a witness to do, he said.
Carter was paroled Jan. 28 from Logan Correctional Center, in Lincoln. He was sentenced in Rock Island County Circut Court in 2006 to 42 months in prison after being convicted of burglary and violating his probation on two theft convictions.
