FULTON, Ill. -- A 21-year-old Fulton man was hospitalized in very critical condition this morning after he was involved in a motorcycle accident near here, Whiteside County Sheriff’s deputies said.

Authorities said Alan Barsema was southbound on Elston Road – south of Fulton – about 1:30 a.m. today when he lost control of his motorcycle. Barsema was thrown several feet. He was not wearing a helmet.

The accident occurred on Elston Road, North of U.S. Route 30.

Barsema was transported by Fulton Ambulance to Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa, and later transferred to University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Authorities said high speed and alcohol may have played a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
