St. Ambrose was the home team on the scoreboard Wednesday as they took on rival Augustana, but the game was played at Augustana, and the Vikings took advantage of the setting.

Fueled by sophomore shortstop Chrissy Rosin’s two-out grand slam in the top of the third, the Vikings (8-5) beat the Bees 8-1 to start their home season after spending time in Florida and Missouri.

For Rosin, the home run and win over St. Ambrose were memorable.

“That was my first home run over the fence here at Augie,” she said. “It was pretty exciting. This win was a team victory. We played solid defensively, and our pitchers did really well. We were able to break through in that third inning and just kept on going which is good because we have been battling a lot lately. Hopefully we can continue this momentum into the conference season.”

Other than the third inning, the game was tightly contested, according to St. Ambrose coach Bridget Murphy.

“The scoreboard doesn’t show how tight of a matchup this was,” Murphy said. “It was a pretty good fight between both schools if you take out that third inning (when Augustana scored seven runs). We have a lot of young players, and I am very proud of how they played today. I thought (losing pitcher) Melissa Krueger did really well. She does a good job of keeping batters off-balance and I think she was able to do that for the most part today.”

Krueger also provided the Bees’ (1-9) lone score when she sent winning pitcher Sara Brokaw’s pitch over the fence in the first inning.

During the pivotal third inning, the Vikings got their first six batters on base. After run-scoring singles by senior Natalie Glunz and sophomore Brittany Snoreck, Rosin came up to bat with two outs and cleared the bases.

“She got that two-strike pitch too close to the plate,” Murphy said.
