Pachino Hill fails to show for plea hearing

One day after being required to attend church for leading police on a chase through Rock Island and Davenport, Pachino Hill failed to appear in court for another hearing Thursday.
Hill, 29, had a plea hearing scheduled in Rock Island County Circuit Court on charges stemming from the same chase for which he was sentenced Wednesday in Scott County.
Judge Charles “Casey” Stengel issued a warrant for Hill’s arrest Thursday after he failed to appear for the hearing, but recalled the warrant a few hours later and set a status hearing for Monday, which Hill is expected to attend.
Hill allegedly led a Rock Island County Sheriff’s deputy on a chase that started in Rock Island and crossed into Davenport last October. The deputy tried to stop him for a broken headlight and eventually caught Hill after a short foot chase down.
On Wednesday, a Scott County judge sentenced Hill to attend church for eight consecutive Sundays while participating in a counseling program offered by Third Missionary Baptist Church. He also must pay a fine and serve one year of probation for the chase.
The judge wanted to give Hill a chance to redeem himself. Hill has a lengthy and violent criminal record, primarily in Scott County.
Assistant Rock Island County State’s Attorney Margaret Osborn said she plans to ask for 120 days in jail for Hill if he pleads guilty. Hill, who could face up to 180 days, is charged with a felony count of aggravated fleeing and already served some time in Rock Island County Jail while awaiting trial on the charge.
Osborn said if Scott County had sentenced Hill to jail she likely would have agreed to a concurrent sentence in Rock Island County. She does not agree with the decision to sentence Hill to counseling and church.
“I’m sorry, I’m not going for that,” she said.
