MONTPELIER, Iowa — Ipsco Steel Inc. officials today said Robert Eby, 41, of Delmar is the engineering maintenance operator who died Wednesday morning following a 58-foot fall at the company’s Montpelier plant.
“He was working on a crane in our melt shop,” said Kelly Brossart, a spokeswoman for the Lisle, Ill.-based company. “It’s where we recycle scrap to make steel.”
Eby had worked seven years for the company.
The plant at 1770 Zachary Ave. has been shut down since the accident, which happened at 9:22 a.m. Wednesday.
The company closed the plant in order to help authorities with their investigation and to give Ipsco employees time to grieve and cope, Brossart said.
“We have been given clearance to resume production but we are holding off until our employees are ready and senior management feels it is safe to do so,” she said.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been contacted.
Grief counselors were called Wednesday to meet with employees at the plant, which employs 420 people, along with another 150 contract workers.
The steelmaking and fabricating plant is one of three steelworks Ipsco operates in North America.
