During March, which is Age-Related Macular Degeneration, or AMD, Awareness Month, EyeCare America is launching a campaign to raise awareness about AMD, its risk factors and treatment options.
Macular degeneration means the central area of the retina is losing function. Someone with macular degeneration might be able to see a clock, but not read the numbers. It is the leading cause of vision loss in people 65 years and older in the United States.
Senior citizens who have not seen an ophthalmologist in three or more years are invited to call the toll-free helpline at 1-866-324-EYES to see whether they qualify for a free eye exam. For more information, visit the Web site eyecareamerica.org.
