CORDOVA, Ill. — Exelon Nuclear’s Quad-Cities Generating Station Unit 2 went offline at 12:01 a.m. Monday to begin a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage.
Employees of the facility along with 1,800 supplemental workers will perform extensive inspections, testing and maintenance on components and equipment in addition to refueling the reactor. The station also will perform comprehensive work on the Unit 2 main generator, the machine that actually produces electricity.
“We always prepare extensively for planned outages, but we have doubled our efforts on this one to ensure we coordinate the generator work with the refuel to ensure that all the work is completed safely and efficiently,” said site vice president Tim Tulon.
Unit 2 operated for 368 days prior to the shutdown. Unit 1 will continue to supply electricity to Exelon customers during the Unit 1 shutdown. The facility is located in Rock Island County, five miles north of Cordova. With both units at full power, the station can produce more than 1,700 net megawatts of electricity.
