The Flames host the Iowa Stars at 7 p.m. Friday before turning around and heading to Des Moines to take on the Stars on Saturday. The first 2,500 fans through the doors Friday will receive Flames St. Patrick’s Day T-shirts.
Scouts’ honor
The Flames will continue to work under the eye of Calgary Eastern scouting director and former NHL head coach Tom Webster through Saturday, while Western scouting director Ron Sutter leaves town today.
The duo has been around since Monday to assist the Flames coaching staff during practices.
“It’s just part of the ongoing process where you come in and spend time with the kids, interact with them, work with them and try and help out with their skill development,’’ explained Sutter, brother of Calgary GM Darryl Sutter. “It’s good for us to be around and for the kids to know that they’re being watched. It’s a great way for us to get to know the kids better.’’
Q-C Flames coach Ryan McGill said the assistance is more than welcome and said the camaraderie is good for the coaches.
“As a matter of fact, we have missed them this year because they haven’t been around as much,’’ he said, noting the two scouts were frequent visitors last year in Omaha.
Darryl Sutter is scheduled to check in on the Q-C Flames on Friday before joining the parent club for a Sunday game in Chicago.
More rookies en route
Ron Sutter said more help than first-rounders Mikeal Backlund and Leland Irving might arrive in the form of first-year pros next season.
Other potential Q-C rookies next year include center John Armstrong, a 2005 third-rounder, and rugged winger J.D. Watt, a fourth-rounder in ’05.
“We’re no different than any team,’’ he said of the Calgary club. “We have a handful of kids who definitely have a shot to play (in the NHL) and a handful of kids on the bubble. It’s all about development and the American Hockey League is a great place for them to develop their skills.’’

Around the AHL
A seven-game Houston Aeros’ winning streak is all the more impressive considering All-Star goalie netminder Nolan Schaefer has been out with a foot injury throughout. Backup Barry Brust is 7-0-0 with a 1.24 GAA and a .956 saves percentage during the run. ... Milwaukee’s Rich Peverly, who scored 12 points in a five-game stretch, was called up to Nashville Monday. ... Peoria has been assigned 6-foot-7 goaltender Ben Bishop, who was signed by the St. Louis Blues to an amateur tryout contract.
