STILLWATER, Okla. — Championships from four sophomores Saturday night helped the Iowa State wrestling team claim its second consecutive Big 12 championship.

Nick Fanthorpe at 133 pounds, Nick Gallick at 141, Cyler Sanderson at 157 and Jake Varner at 184 all took first place to help the Cyclones claim a 10-point win over runner-up Nebraska for the team title.

Iowa State qualified all 10 of its wrestlers for the NCAA tourney while compiling 72.5 team points. The Cornhuskers finished with 62.5, while Oklahoma State took third with 52.5 to finish three points ahead of Missouri. Oklahoma finished fifth with 24 points.

“We are wrestling well at the right time,” ISU coach Cael Sanderson said. “Our wrestlers have been working toward this, some of them for much of their lives.”

The four champions were the most for Iowa State since 1996, and Gallick and Sanderson avenged earlier losses to earn their titles.

Gallick used an overtime single-leg takedown to edge top-seeded Nathan Morgan of Oklahoma State in the final at 141, while Sanderson scored a takedown with 34 seconds remaining to edge Missouri’s Michael Chandler 6-5.

ISU’s Mitch Mueller at 149 and heavyweight David Zabriskie finished second, while seniors Aron Scott and David Bertolino finished third.

Freshman Tyler Clark, a Bettendorf grad, took fourth at 125 pounds.
