The sale by Simon Property Group of three outparcel lots around SouthPark Mall will bring at least one new business to the complex.
The lots were sold to Taco Bell, DHCU Community Credit Union and Kentucky Fried Chicken.
“The sale of these parcels of land will bring more quality businesses — and new life — to SouthPark Mall,” said Jennifer Verscha, the mall’s manager of mall marketing. “These recent transactions are further evidence of our pledge to continue to introduce new stores to our blend of retail and restaurant offerings and provide our shoppers with a mall that they and their families will want to visit on a regular basis.”
She said Taco Bell will remain in its current location on the mall’s exterior between Firestone and Arby’s. But instead of leasing the space from SouthPark, Taco Bell has purchased the property.
Dave Parochetti, local franchisee owner of Taco Bell, said he is happy to own the land and plans to continue to run his restaurant with the “same great customer service and cuisine.”
Currently located inside the mall and sharing space with IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union, DHCU Community Credit Union will move to a new exterior location at the site of the former Montgomery Ward Auto building between IHOP and Gordman’s.
Demolition of the Ward building — which has been vacant for years — will begin in the spring to make way for the new DHCU building, which will begin construction in 2009.
Jeff VanHerzeele, facilities manager for DHCU, said once the new facility is completed next year outside SouthPark, the branch inside the mall will close.
Cheryl Frame, vice president of marketing for DHCU, said the credit union serves 36,000 members with assets exceeding $330 million. All members are made up of people who live or work within 50 miles of the Quad-Cities, she said.
“We have been in the mall and sharing space with IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union since 1984,” she said. “Our plan always was to locate outside the mall.”
Kentucky Fried Chicken will build a new store on the site of the former Subway restaurant was. That building will be demolished, Verscha said.
