Five candidates for the director’s position for the Scott Emergency Communication Center will be in Davenport today for interviews.

Finalists were cut down from 32 applicants to six, and one of the finalists withdrew. None of the 12 local applicants are among the finalists, Scott County Administrator Ray Wierson said.

Scott County Board Chairman Jim Hancock, who chairs the emergency communication center board, said he is pleased with the quality of the candidates. The ideal candidate will have a good combination of technical knowledge and people skills. The goal is to have a director selected this month.

“This person really has to have the skills to talk to these entities and get them on the same page,” he said.

The interview committee includes Bettendorf Police Chief Phil Redington, Davenport Fire Chief Mark Frese, Eldridge Police Chief Martin Stolmeier, Sheriff Dennis Conard and Wierson.

“It is paramount to get the right person in place,” Bettendorf Mayor Mike Freemire, who serves as vice chairman of the SECC board, said. “This position is such that it is brand new, and we all know it is going to be challenging working with all the entities.”

Freemire doesn’t think filling the position out of the five finalists will be difficult.

“We have some excellent resumes and people who are very highly qualified,” he said.
