DeWITT, Iowa — The Wapsipinicon River is the latest to reach flood levels from the weekend’s rapid snowmelt.
The river reached moderate flood levels Tuesday, sending water out of its banks in mostly rural areas.
Clinton County Emergency Management Coordinator Chance Kness said Tuesday he was not aware of any serious flooding problems along the Wapsipinicon, which separates Clinton County from Scott County. Kness said he expected the river to go down before any serious damage is done.
Flood stage for the Wapsipinicon River four miles south of DeWitt is 11 feet. As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, the river level was 11.74 feet, according to the National Weather Service. It was at 11.78 feet at 5 p.m. and near its crest. The river is expected to be back to 11 feet by midday today and continue to recede for the rest of the week, according to the NWS forecast.
Meanwhile, flooding continues on the Rock River in Rock Island County.
Flooding along the Rock River in Moline has forced the closure of several streets and parks, city officials said.
Closed to through traffic are 60th Street south of Greenvalley Park, North Shore Drive between 16th and 26th streets, and South Shore Drive both east and west of 27th Street.
Harold’s Landing, Old Greenvalley Park, and Veterans Park are closed due to the flooding.
There also appears to be ice action on the Rock River at Moline, said meteorologist Mike McClure of NWS in
Davenport.
At 4:30 p.m., the Rock River at Moline was at 14.46 feet. But by 5:30 p.m., the river had fallen to 14.35 feet. Such large fluctuations in such a short period of time are strong indications of ice action on the river, McClure said.
If ice jams do not hinder the flow, the Rock River at Moline is expected to crest some time during the overnight hours and then continue falling during the day Wednesday, he said.
The Rock River at Joslin stood at 14.48 feet at 5:30 p.m. McClure said the Rock at Joslin is expected to crest Wednesday morning at
14.9 feet. The Rock’s flood stage at Joslin also is 12 feet.
Flood levels to watch
Here are the areas affected by the Rock’s flooding at each level, according to the National Weather Service:
13.8 feet — Water affects 49th Avenue in Moline.
13.5 feet — Water affects 60th Street south of John Deere Road in Moline and Green Valley Park. Water is on Canal Road on Big Island.
13 feet — Water affects homes on South Shore Drive in Moline and cuts off access to homes east of the I-74 bridge. Water affects Vandruff’s Island in Rock Island and 7th Street in Coal Valley.
12.5 feet — Water affects residences in the Friendship Farm area.
12 feet — Water affects residences near the 27th Street bridge.
11 feet — Water affects agricultural land upstream from Moline.
