Former Illinois state Sen. Denny Jacobs said Wednesday he won’t seek the chairmanship of the Rock Island County Democratic Party.

Jacobs’ decision appears to leave Rock Island County Treasurer LuAnn Kerr the front runner for the job.

Longtime chairman John Gianulis announced last week that he is retiring from the job that he’s held since 1968. That opened the door to a battle for succession and it appeared, at first, as if Jacobs might jump into the race. He said last week he was considering it, but that no longer is the case.

“I’ve got enough on my plate,” Jacobs said Wednesday. “It just isn’t in the cards this time.“

Activists in the county say Kerr already has considerable support from the 104 precinct committeement who will choose Gianulis’s replacement next week. There was a busier than usual slate of candidates for precinct posts in the Feb. 5 primary, and some of the new members are backing Kerr’s candidacy.

John Brown, a party spokesman who also is a committeeman and a Kerr backer, said he believes she has the votes needed to win.

Any precinct committeman can be nominated for the job, though, and East Moline Alderman Helen Heiland said Wednesday night she is interested in the job. “I feel I’m the most qualified,” she said. Heiland has worked closely with Gianulis for years.

There also had been reports Illinois Rep. Mike Boland, D-East Moline, might be interested in the job, but he said Wednesday that he, too, would not run.
