Numerous groups in the Quad-Cities are happy to take food donations. Here are some of the largest:

n The “McAnthony Window” ministry operated by St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, downtown Davenport, is especially appreciative of sliced meat, bread and sweets. Call (563) 322-3303.

The window serves soup, sandwiches, sweets and coffee/juice 9-11 a.m. Monday-Friday.

If there are donations that cannot be used in the window, they will be referred to Father Conroy’s Vineyard of Hope, Davenport, which is operated by Sister Ludmilla Benda.

n Café on Vine, founded by John Lewis Community Services and now operated by Merton House, a faith-based nonprofit group, will take all kinds of food.

“We take anything and then use our own judgment,” says Amy Fortney, who runs the café.

Call the café at (563) 324-4472 or her cell phone at (563) 209-0056. (Fortney shares her cellular number with the public because she does not want to miss a donation just because she isn’t at the café at a given time.)

The café serves lunch 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday-Saturday and dinner 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Sundays.

In the summer, garden produce such as tomatoes and green peppers is especially welcome. If there is too much to use immediately, Fortney will freeze the produce for use in soups or casseroles the following winter.

If it weren’t for contributions, Café on Vine likely would collapse. Some 98 percent of what it serves is donated, she said.

n  Salvation Army, 301 W. 6th St., Davenport. Call (563) 324-4808. The Salvation Army serves a meal at 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

n  Christian Care Men’s Rescue Mission, Rock Island. Call (309) 786-5734. The mission serves breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the week.

n Victory Center Rescue Mission, Clinton, Iowa, (563) 242-9016.

Donations from businesses and restaurants also are sought, especially packaged bakery products, and produce and dairy products that are approaching their “sell by” date but are not “expired.”

n In addition, food pantries always are in need of nonperishable food items.
