A former Moline woman who works at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb has explained what is happening there at this hour.

Phyllis Zerull, a DeWitt, Iowa, native, said students began sending each other text messages around 3:15 p.m. about a shooting on campus.

At 4:18 p.m., Zerull responded to an e-mail from a Times reporter, saying, “They are evacuating the campus now. Students are supposed to go back to the residence halls. They have the bus line running from a different place on campus to take the kids back, and we are supposed to leave the campus immediately.

“We just heard there were 15 (victims). Whew – this is totally weird!"
