Moline city officials have decided not to spend money to trap wolves that are reportedly roaming some parts of the city.

Lew Steinbrecher, city administrator, said since there is no proof wolves are in the area he recommended the council not take any action at Tuesday’s meeting. He said the city has received fewer reports of wolf sightings recently.

“If we do have reports the police will investigate just like we would any other police call,” he said. “They will try to observe (the wolf).”

The city was considering paying a local wildlife service to photograph the wolf and then possibly snare the animal. Putting out snares and having them checked daily for 30 days would have cost $7,000.

Steinbrecher said the city didn’t have the funds budgeted for such a project and needs the money elsewhere.
