Volunteers and representatives from the Quad-City Steamwheelers collected coins and dollars bills at local Fareway stores Saturday eager to accomplish this year’s goal of raising $12,000 for the 2008 Churches United Souper Bowl of Caring.

The money will go toward food for Churches United of the Quad-City Area’s hunger ministries in Scott and Rock Island counties.

“With the recent instability in the economy, there’s a need to help people who are hungry in the community,” said Tom Moritz of Davenport and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Volunteering “is a really good experience. You get to meet really good friends,” Ryan Sherrod of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Davenport said.

The Quad-Cities event is part of a nation-wide collection effort during Super Bowl weekend. The millions of dollars raised support hundreds of food pantries across the United States.

Volunteers collected about $3,000 in a special “pre-season” raffle of a 42-inch LG Plasma TV, Gale McClean, a member of the Souper Bowl committee, said. Having the Steamwheelers on board with the Saturday collections was a good help.
