The Davenport North Wildcats were within range of an upset at halftime during Saturday’s contest.

Down by eight (32-24) at the half, the Wildcats (2-14, 2-10 MAC) started the second half with turnovers and errant shots which the Knights were able to turn into a 10-0 run that made a close game into a rout, winning 68-49.

By the end of the third quarter, North was down 50-28.

Senior Knight Ben Bush, who led all scorers with 18, said he thinks his team is starting to show what it is made of after a period of inconsistency.

“A lot of different people are starting to step things up,” he said. “We are starting to peak at the right time, with just a few more games before the 2A playoffs.”

Assumption coach Pat Finn said he was glad to see the Knights (10-8, 8-5 MAC) respond so well after a loss Friday night to North Scott.

“I didn’t know how they would react so soon after that loss,” he said. “They came out though and got the job done. They showed they wanted this win. Tonight, there was a lot more effort and more drive than Friday night, I thought. Bush, Tom Pettis, and Mike Furlong all showed strong senior leadership tonight. We would rather see less points scored against us, but it was a good win for us. I am also pleased that we are getting balanced scoring throughout the lineup. I think that we need that to be a good team.“

Junior Wildcat Martez Williams led North’s attack with 11 points.
