Tuesday was supposed to bring Round 2 between Mississippi Athletic Conference powers.

Instead, the day brought dropping temperatures and plenty of accompanying precipitation.

The result was mass postponements of high school basketball games across the area. Marshall Gymnasium stood silent as thousands of fans will have to wait until Saturday to see the Davenport Central boys play Bettendorf with the MAC lead at stake.

All 13 games involving MAC and Western Big Six boys and girls teams were postponed. Several of the non-conference matchups might not be rescheduled.

The Central-Bettendorf rematch — the Blue Devils won by 12 on Jan. 4 — already has been moved to 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Bulldogs coach Kevin Skillett found a silver lining.

“It really worked out OK for us because things are going to be so busy for us the next couple weeks,” he said. “Having a day off now when things are going to get so hot and heavy is nice.”

Central, the No. 7 team in Iowa’s Class 4A poll, held an optional shoot-around Tuesday, helping alleviate pent-up energy. The team was hyped to go after a school pep assembly earlier in the day.

“I think they were disappointed,” Central coach Craig Wurdinger said. “I’m sure they can get excited again.”
