Pageant winners head to Miss Illinois contest

The winners of the Miss Mississippi Crown Scholarship Pageant held Jan. 12 will be heading to the Miss Illinois Pageant that runs from June 17 to 21 at the Norris Cultural Arts Center in St. Charles, Ill.

Miss Rock River Valley joined the Miss Mississippi Crown Pageant this year for a double extravaganza.

Both organizations are local preliminary pageants to the Miss Illinois and Miss America pageants.

Kelsey Vandike, of Geneseo, Ill., won Miss Mississippi 2008. She is a senior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the daughter of Steve and Vicky Vandike of Geneseo. Her talent is alto saxophone and her platform is “Giving Beauty a Makeover.”

Tana Durbin won Miss Rock River Valley 2008. She is a 2006 graduate of St. Ambrose University, Davenport. She is the daughter of Jim and Denice Durbin of Coal Valley, Ill. Her talent is dance and her platform is “Putting the FUN in Fitness.”

In other pageant competition, McKenzie Bert won the title of Miss Mississippi Crown Outstanding Teen 2008. She is the daughter of Dale Bert of Bettendorf and Patricia Belowske of Orion, Ill. She is a sophomore at Orion High School. Her talent is dance and her platform is “Toys for Tots.”

Rachel Wirt won the title of Miss Rock River Valley Outstanding Teen 2008. She is the daughter of Rick and Lori Wirt of Hillsdale, Ill. She is in the eighth grade at Riverdale Middle School. Her talent is piano and her platform is “Raising Cancer Awareness.”

Both Bert and Wirt will compete in the Miss Illinois Outstanding Teen Pageant on June 20 and 21 in St. Charles.
