A Clinton, Iowa, physician is on probation and must pay a fine to the Iowa Board of Medicine for inappropriate actions, officials announced Thursday.
Douglas Cody, an ear, nose and throat specialist who now practices in Clinton, closed his practice in Keokuk, Iowa, in 2002 without adequate notice to his patients or making arrangements for their continuing care. He communicated in a “disruptive” manner with those patients, and “has displayed a pattern of demeaning, blaming, or shaming selected co-workers and colleagues.”
Cody’s “inappropriate communication style has resulted in recurring conflicts and difficulties in three different work settings over the past seven years,” the board says in its order. “While a number of (Cody’s) colleagues, co-workers and patients strongly recommend him as an excellent physician and surgeon, he has had serious conflicts with a significant number of co-workers and colleagues.
“The board believes that (Cody’s) disruptive behavior may be a response to increased stress, both professionally and personally. Nevertheless, these types of disruptive behaviors can have significant adverse effects on patient care and must be addressed by the board.”
Cody must pay a $5,000 fine. His license was actually suspended, but the board stayed that suspension and placed him on indefinite probation.
