Muscatine was able to keep up with the top team in the Mississippi Athletic Conference on Saturday — for a quarter.

After the first eight minutes, it was all Davenport Central as the Blue Devils cruised to a

77-50 victory over the Muskies.

Central didn’t have to drive to the basket too much against the Muskies’ defense. Instead, Davenport Central hit 13

3-pointers, including eight in the first half alone.

Saturday’s win marked the return of Central junior Hal Bateman. After missing out on Friday’s Blue Devil win over Pleasant Valley, he teamed with senior E.J. Hicks to score 32 of the Central’s 41 points in the second and third quarters.

Hicks finished with 20 points, including four treys, but he acknowledged that Bateman is key to his and his team’s success.

“We have a strong connection, me and Hal,” Hicks said. “He has really good court vision and that leads to easy baskets for me and my teammates.”

Muscatine (6-6, 4-4 MAC) was able to use its perimeter shooting to keep pace with Central in the first quarter, which ended in a 17-17 tie. After hitting two 3-pointers in the first period, though, the Muskies only hit one more, while Central (11-2,

8-0 MAC) kept its hot shooting streak throughout the game.

The Blue Devils started the second quarter with a 15-0 run.

“We shot about 60 percent from 2-point range and over 50 percent from 3-point range,” said Central coach Craig Wurdinger. “If we always shoot the ball that well, we’ll usually win.”

“We came out to play and fed off L.A. (Pomlee, who scored 16 points and had three blocks),” Hicks said. “Being able to hit all those 3’s also helped keep our energy level and confidence up. I also got to credit our bench. They came in and helped us seal the win.”
