Maquoketa Fire Chief Mark Beck said Saturday that the Iowa state fire marshal has not made a determination on the cause of the fire. He said it’s possible an announcement could be made today. Beck said crews remained on the scene Saturday night to make sure no flare-ups occur.

“We’ll be rotating people in and use our mutual aid help for a fresh crew,” he said. “I’ve been fire chief for 25 years and this is the worst fire I’ve seen.”

Former Fire Chief Richard “Jim” Franks said one of the worst fires was in the 1940s when a lumber yard burned where the First Lutheran Church now stands at 210 E. Platt.

“It burned for a month,” Franks said Saturday afternoon.

He also recalled another Main Street Fire in 1970, but only one building burned at the corner of Main and Pleasant Streets.
