SPRINGFIELD — State officials announced Friday that 105 Illinois high schools — three of them from the Quad-City region — have won extra money and resources to operate safe-driving programs developed by students and teachers.

The winning high schools from this region are Alleman in Rock Island, Annawan and Erie.

As part of the state’s Operation Teen Safe Driving initiative, 220 high schools sent applications with ideas for programs to help cut down on traffic accidents and deaths among teenagers.

Teenagers already are the subject of new laws put in place this year that make earning a driver’s license more difficult in hopes that more practice will reduce crashes.

The winners could receive grants to operate their proposed programs, but officials did not say Friday how much each would get.

“Students at these schools went above and beyond in coming up with ways to educate their peers about safe driving, and we look forward to seeing these schools move forward with their plans,” Gov. Rod Blagojevich said.
