ALEDO, Ill. — A Westmer High School senior was hospitalized in critical condition today after an accident earlier in the week.

David Miller of Joy was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria after a one-car crash Tuesday night on Illinois 94 just north of Hamlet, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said.

The teen was initially airlifted to Trinity Medical Center in Rock Island, then transferred to St. Francis. A second teenager, Jackie Bertelsen, also was injured. The Aledo High School junior was treated and released from Trinity Medical Center.

The Reynolds Fire Department, Andalusia Ambulance Service and MedForce helicopter assisted the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department.

Crisis team counselors were at Westmer High School on Wednesday and today to talk with students and staff about the crash. The Westmer girls basketball team forfeited their basketball game Wednesday night because of the accident.
