PRESTON, Iowa — Paul Tobin will retire at the end of this school year from Preston Community Schools as superintendent and elementary principal, the second time he’s retired as a superintendent.
Tobin has been superintendent in Preston for seven years. Before that, he retired as superintendent in the Mount Carroll, Ill., district.
“I came here thinking I wouldn’t be here more than three or four years,” Tobin said. “It was a tough decision. I enjoy my work in the district. We have a good staff and a good community, but it was time.”
Preston Community School Board members approved his retirement Monday night, but it wasn’t a surprise to them.
Tobin told board members of his intention to retire last spring and then confirmed it in the fall. However, staff members weren’t told until Monday and many attended the meeting Monday night to express their surprise.
Tobin said the board has not discussed his replacement. Before Tobin joined the district, Preston and East Central School District, Miles, shared a superintendent.
“It’s been a good run. But it’s time for me to do a few things like see some Chicago Cubs games,” he said.
